Yellow Rice (n.): A story about a girl and her mother

About: An 11-minute short about a teen's experience as a second-generation Indonesian-American and how this experience affects her relationship with her first-generation immigrant mother. The film was produced at the UCLA School of Theater Film and Television by Mind over Tuadi Productions.

Production Notes: When Yellow Rice was in post-production, I took a class taught by the amazing sound editor Cece Hall who asked us the simple questions, "What is your film about? What is it meant to do?" I thank her to this day for asking those questions because without them in mind, there's no telling the different avenues the film could have gone down. I spent months experimenting and wondering as to where the film was supposed to go after its production, but thanks to that simple question, the film shaped into what it is today--the truest form of the story I had set out to tell. And, knowing this, I was able to send her this response, "I want the audience to walk away from a screening of Yellow Rice wanting to call their mother. This movie is about opening yourself up to the people and the moments who matter and letting them light up your life. It’s about communication--meaningful and truthful communication--with the world and with yourself. Cuz hell, no one’s going to say it for you, right?"
